Building Bridges Through Books: The Guru Krupa Foundation’s Support for Literacy Hubs

At Start Lighthouse, we know that books are more than just pages and words — they are bridges that connect young readers to their culture, their community, and the wider world. Thanks to the generous support of The Guru Krupa Foundation, we’ve been able to expand our Literacy Hubs at PS/MS 5, PS 161, and PS 214 with a rich collection of multicultural titles that honor the voices, histories, and experiences of our students and their families.

These new additions ensure that children not only build their home libraries but also discover stories that reflect their own identities while introducing them to perspectives beyond their immediate communities.

One of our students, Brandon, shared:
"The books I get from the Literacy Hub are my favorite because I can read them with my little sister. I like that the stories are about kids like me who try new things and don’t give up."

Parents are also seeing the difference at home. Candy, the mother of a first grader at PS/MS 5, told us:
"My daughter brings books home every week and insists we read together before bed. It has become our special time, and I can see how proud she feels when she talks about the stories."

Through the Foundation’s support, Start Lighthouse continues to create welcoming spaces that celebrate diversity and empower students with the joy of reading. These books are more than resources — they are seeds of confidence, imagination, and belonging.

Thank you to the Guru Krupa Foundation for helping us bring the joy of reading to even more students and families.
